Why pricing your coaching program the right way matters

Coaches leave thousands of dollars on the table every year — not because their programs aren't valuable, but because their pricing structure creates friction. A single flat price turns away clients who can't pay upfront. A vague "contact me" button loses buyers who are ready to purchase right now. Getting your coaching program pricing right means structuring it so the right clients can say yes, quickly, at a price that reflects your value.

Coachful's built-in billing system — powered by Stripe Connect — gives you the flexibility to charge for your programs in almost any configuration: one-time payments, recurring subscriptions, multi-tier offers, payment plans, and discount coupons. You get paid directly into your own Stripe account, with no manual invoicing required.

TL;DR — Coaching program pricing options at a glance

  • One-time payment: client pays in full at enrollment, gains immediate access.
  • Payment plan: split a program fee into 2, 3, 6, or 12 instalments automatically billed by Stripe.
  • Recurring subscription: weekly, monthly, or annual billing — great for ongoing or open-ended programs.
  • Multi-tier offers: sell the same program at different price points (e.g., self-study, group, VIP 1:1).
  • Coupons: percentage or flat-rate discounts you can share with leads, launch lists, or corporate clients.

Setting up pricing on a coaching program

Before you configure billing, make sure your program is already created and has at least a draft curriculum. Pricing lives inside the program's Offer settings, not the program content itself — so you can update price without touching your weeks, tasks, or goals.

  1. Go to Coach → Programs in your Coachful dashboard and click the program you want to price.
  2. Select the Offers tab at the top of the program editor.
  3. Click Create offer. Give it a clear internal name (e.g., "12-Week Transformation — Full Pay").
  4. Choose a pricing type: One-time, Subscription, or Payment Plan.
  5. Enter your amount and currency. Coachful supports all currencies Stripe supports.
  6. If you chose Payment Plan, set the number of instalments and the interval (weekly, monthly).
  7. Toggle Publicly listed if you want this offer visible on your program's public landing page. Turn it off for private offers you share via direct link only.
  8. Click Save offer. Your Stripe product and price are created automatically — no need to visit the Stripe dashboard.

Repeat the steps above to add additional tiers (see the multi-tier section below). Each offer gets its own checkout link, so you can embed or share them independently.

How payment plans work in Coachful

A payment plan lets a client commit to your full program fee while spreading payments over time. For example, a $1,800 program might be offered as 3 monthly payments of $600. Stripe handles every scheduled charge automatically — you don't chase invoices or send reminders.

Payment plan mechanics

When a client enrolls via a payment plan offer, Stripe charges the first instalment immediately and schedules the remaining charges based on the interval you set. If a payment fails, Stripe retries it according to your Smart Retries settings. You can see the payment status for every client directly in Coach → Clients → [Client Name] → Billing.

Client access is granted on successful first payment and remains active as long as no instalment is overdue. You can configure whether access is paused or revoked on a failed payment — find that setting under Coach → Settings → Billing → Failed payment behavior.

Choosing the right instalment structure

A good rule of thumb: keep the first payment low enough to remove the "can I afford this?" hesitation, but not so low that it attracts under-committed clients. Many coaches on Coachful use a 3-month plan for programs priced between $1,000 and $3,000, and a 6-month plan for higher-ticket engagements above $3,000.

Pro tip: Offer a small incentive for paying in full — for instance, list your full-pay offer at $1,750 and your 3-instalment plan at $600 × 3 = $1,800. The modest premium funds the added Stripe processing cost and nudges clients who can afford it toward the simpler option.

Structuring multi-tier coaching program offers

Multi-tier pricing lets you sell one program at multiple price points based on what's included at each level. This is one of the most effective ways to increase your average revenue per client without creating entirely new programs.

Common tier structures for coaching programs

  • Self-study tier: access to the program curriculum, tasks, and goals only — no live calls, no group chat. Lower price point, higher volume.
  • Group tier: curriculum plus enrollment in a cohort squad with weekly group calls. Mid-range price.
  • VIP / 1:1 tier: everything in the group tier plus a set number of 1:1 booking sessions with you. Premium price.

In Coachful, each tier is a separate offer on the same program. When a client buys the VIP tier, you can automatically grant them a booking link with a predetermined session pack — for example, 4 × 60-minute calls — alongside full squad and program access. This is configured per-offer under Offer → Included sessions.

Displaying tiers on your program landing page

Your program's public landing page (accessible at {yourslug}.coachful.co/programs/{program-slug} or on your custom domain) automatically shows all publicly listed offers as a pricing table. Drag to reorder them so the tier you want to highlight most appears in the center — most visitors anchor to the middle option, a well-documented phenomenon in pricing psychology.

Coaches using Coachful report that simply adding a second tier to an existing program — even at a modest price increase — increases average order value without reducing conversion. Adding a third "VIP" tier can anchor perception so the middle option feels like a bargain.

Using coupons and discounts

Coupons let you offer a reduced price without permanently changing your listed offer. They're ideal for launch promotions, corporate bulk enrollments, referral rewards, or retaining a client who's on the fence.

  1. Go to Coach → Billing → Coupons and click Create coupon.
  2. Choose Percentage off (e.g., 20%) or Fixed amount off (e.g., $200 off).
  3. Set an optional expiry date and a maximum redemption count.
  4. Assign the coupon to specific offers or make it global across all your programs.
  5. Copy the coupon code and share it — clients enter it at checkout, and Stripe applies it automatically.

You can also embed a coupon code directly in a checkout URL by appending ?coupon=YOURCODE to the offer link. This is useful for email sequences or lead-magnet funnels built with Coachful's website builder where you want the discount pre-applied without asking the client to type anything.

Recurring subscriptions vs. one-time payments — which is right for your program?

The right model depends on your program structure. Here's a quick decision framework:

  • Use a one-time payment if your program has a clear start and end date (e.g., a 12-week cohort with a fixed curriculum). Clients know what they're buying, and the relationship has a natural close.
  • Use a subscription if you offer ongoing access — a monthly membership community, a rolling program with evergreen content, or an accountability squad clients stay in indefinitely.
  • Use a payment plan when you want a one-time-payment outcome (paid in full by the end) but need to remove the upfront cost barrier for clients.

Subscriptions churn. Payment plans don't — because Stripe treats each instalment as a scheduled charge on a committed amount, not a voluntary renewal. For fixed-duration programs, payment plans almost always outperform subscriptions in total revenue collected.

Connecting Stripe and getting paid

Coachful uses Stripe Connect, which means your clients pay you — not Coachful — directly. There's no revenue share or platform fee taken from your program sales. You need a connected Stripe account before any offer can go live.

  1. Go to Coach → Settings → Billing.
  2. Click Connect Stripe account. You'll be redirected to Stripe's onboarding.
  3. Complete Stripe's identity and banking verification (usually 5–10 minutes).
  4. Once verified, return to Coachful. Your offers are now live and can accept payments.

Payouts from Stripe land in your bank account on Stripe's standard payout schedule (typically 2 business days for cards in most countries). You can manage payout frequency directly in your Stripe dashboard.

Pro tips for pricing your coaching programs

Price for the transformation, not the time

Hourly pricing is a trap for coaches. A 12-week program that transforms a client's health, business, or relationships is worth far more than 12 hours of your calendar. Anchor your price to the outcome the client achieves, then work backward to make sure your delivery model (sessions, squad support, tasks) justifies it.

Test prices without disrupting existing clients

Because Coachful offers are separate from the program curriculum, you can create a new offer at a higher price point and leave existing clients on their original offer. Run an A/B price test by sharing the new offer link with a new audience segment while keeping the old link active for warm leads already familiar with the old price.

Use intake calls to qualify before pricing

For high-ticket programs (above $3,000), many coaches use a free or low-cost Intake Call booking — available natively in Coachful under Coach → Bookings → Intake calls — to qualify prospects before presenting the offer. This keeps your checkout page from anchoring too low and positions the conversation as a mutual fit assessment, not a sales pitch.

Michelle tip: Ask Coachful's AI assistant Michelle "Help me structure a 3-tier pricing offer for my [program name]" — she can scaffold the offer setup and suggest instalment counts based on your program length, saving you 20 minutes of configuration.

Troubleshooting common pricing mistakes

Offer isn't showing on my program landing page

Check that the offer is toggled to Publicly listed in Offers → [Offer name] → Visibility. If your Stripe account isn't fully verified, offers will be created but checkout will be disabled — revisit Coach → Settings → Billing to complete verification.

Payment plan instalments aren't charging automatically

Stripe handles scheduled charges, but it requires your Stripe account to have automatic collection enabled. In your Stripe dashboard, go to Billing → Settings → Invoice settings and make sure Automatic collection is turned on. Coachful creates the subscription schedule on your behalf, but Stripe's collection settings must be active.

Coupon code isn't being accepted at checkout

Verify the coupon hasn't expired or hit its redemption cap under Coach → Billing → Coupons. Also confirm the coupon is assigned to the specific offer the client is purchasing — a global coupon works across all offers, but an offer-specific coupon only applies to the assigned offer.

Client paid but isn't showing as enrolled

Enrollment is triggered by Stripe's webhook. If there's a webhook delivery delay (rare), the client will appear in Coach → Clients within a few minutes. If enrollment hasn't processed after 10 minutes, go to Coach → Settings → Integrations → Stripe → Webhooks and click Resync.

I need to change the price but I have active clients

Never edit an existing offer that has active enrollments — this can affect active Stripe subscriptions or payment schedules. Instead, archive the old offer and create a new offer at the updated price. Existing clients stay on their original offer; new clients see the new price. You can archive an offer under Offers → [Offer name] → Archive.

Ready to launch your program with the right pricing?

Pricing is one of the highest-leverage decisions you make as a coach. A well-structured offer — with a fair payment plan, a compelling tier above it, and a coupon ready for launch week — can meaningfully increase enrollment without you needing more leads. The mechanics are already built into Coachful; it's just a matter of configuring them for your program.

Frequently asked questions

What payment options can I offer for my coaching program?
In Coachful, you can offer one-time payments, recurring subscriptions (weekly, monthly, or annual), and instalment-based payment plans. You can also create multiple tiers for the same program — for example, self-study, group, and VIP 1:1 — each with its own price and checkout link.
How does a payment plan differ from a subscription for a coaching program?
A payment plan splits a fixed total fee into scheduled instalments — the client has committed to the full amount, and Stripe charges each instalment automatically. A subscription is an ongoing, voluntary renewal that the client can cancel. For fixed-duration programs, payment plans typically result in higher total revenue collected because there's no cancellation risk mid-program.
Does Coachful take a percentage of my coaching program sales?
No. Coachful uses Stripe Connect, which means payments go directly from your client to your own Stripe account. Coachful does not take a revenue share or transaction fee on program sales — you keep everything minus Stripe's standard processing fee (typically around 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction in the US).
Can I offer a discount coupon for my coaching program?
Yes. You can create percentage-off or fixed-amount-off coupons under Coach → Billing → Coupons. Coupons can have expiry dates, redemption limits, and can be scoped to specific offers or applied globally. You can also pre-apply a coupon by appending ?coupon=YOURCODE to your checkout URL.
Can I change the price of my coaching program after clients have already enrolled?
You should not edit an active offer that has existing enrollments, as this can disrupt live Stripe subscriptions or payment plans. Instead, archive the old offer and create a new one at the updated price. Existing clients remain on their original pricing; new enrollments use the new offer.
How do I display multiple pricing tiers on my coaching program's landing page?
Any offer you mark as 'Publicly listed' in the Offers tab will appear on your program's public landing page as a pricing table. You can drag to reorder the tiers — placing the offer you most want to highlight in the center position tends to increase conversions due to anchoring effects.
What happens if a client misses a payment plan instalment?
Stripe automatically retries failed payments using its Smart Retries logic. You can configure whether client access is paused or revoked on a failed payment under Coach → Settings → Billing → Failed payment behavior. You can also see each client's payment status in Coach → Clients → [Client Name] → Billing.
