Why mobile video calls with your coach sometimes feel harder than they should
You open your phone, tap the session link your coach sent, and… nothing happens. Or the video freezes. Or your microphone refuses to work. Mobile video calling in a coaching context has a few quirks that desktop users never encounter — and most of them are fixable in under two minutes once you know where to look.
This guide covers everything iOS and Android clients need to know to get crystal-clear video calls with their coach on Coachful — from first-time permissions to troubleshooting a dropped connection mid-session.
TL;DR — Quick answers for mobile video calls
- Can't hear or see anything? Check that Coachful has camera and microphone permission in your phone's Settings app.
- Call won't load? Use the Coachful mobile app (available at app.coachful.co/mobile) rather than a third-party browser.
- Video freezing? Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa) and lower your video resolution in the in-call settings.
- Session disappeared? Your coach may have ended the call — check your Bookings tab for a reschedule or a session recording link.
How Coachful video calls work on mobile
Coachful's video calling is powered by Stream Video, a real-time infrastructure layer that handles HD video, spatial audio, and end-to-end encryption. When your coach books a 1:1 session, a group call, or an intake call with you, Coachful automatically generates a secure call room linked to that booking. You join from inside the Coachful app — no separate Zoom account, no third-party link to track down.
On mobile, Coachful runs as a progressive web app (PWA) and as a native shell app (iOS and Android) built with Capacitor. The native app gives you the most stable experience: background audio keeps playing if you briefly switch apps, push notifications alert you when your coach starts the call, and camera/microphone permissions are handled cleanly at the OS level. If you haven't installed the native app yet, visit app.coachful.co/mobile from your phone's browser — it will route you to the App Store or Google Play automatically.
Setting up permissions correctly (iOS)
Apple requires every app to request camera and microphone access before a call can start. If you tapped "Don't Allow" the first time you opened Coachful, the app cannot ask again — you have to grant access manually.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Scroll down and tap Coachful (or search for it at the top of Settings).
- Toggle Camera to ON (green).
- Toggle Microphone to ON (green).
- Return to the Coachful app and re-join your session.
If you're joining via Safari (PWA mode) instead of the native app, Safari manages its own permissions. Tap the AA icon in the address bar → Website Settings → set Camera and Microphone to Allow. Note that Safari on iOS 16 and earlier has limited WebRTC support; upgrading to iOS 17+ is strongly recommended for reliable video calls.
Setting up permissions correctly (Android)
Android permissions vary slightly by manufacturer skin (Samsung One UI, Pixel UI, MIUI, etc.), but the core path is the same.
- Open Settings → Apps (sometimes labelled "Application Manager").
- Find and tap Coachful.
- Tap Permissions.
- Set Camera to Allow only while using the app.
- Set Microphone to Allow only while using the app.
- Re-open Coachful and join your session.
On Chrome for Android (PWA mode), permissions are managed per-site. When the browser permission prompt appears at the bottom of the screen, tap Allow. If you accidentally blocked it, go to Chrome → tap the lock icon in the address bar → Permissions → reset Camera and Microphone.
Joining a session from your phone — step by step
Once permissions are sorted, joining a coaching call takes less than 30 seconds.
- Open the Coachful app on your phone and sign in if prompted.
- Tap the Bookings icon in the bottom navigation bar. You'll see your upcoming sessions listed with date, time, and coach name.
- Tap your scheduled session card. A detail screen opens showing session type, duration, and a Join Call button.
- Tap Join Call. The call room opens — you'll see a preview of your camera before you go live.
- Toggle your camera and microphone on or off using the icons at the bottom of the preview screen, then tap Join.
- Wait for your coach to admit you if the session hasn't started yet. You'll see a "Waiting for host" screen.
Your coach can also start an instant call directly from the chat thread inside a squad or 1:1 message. If that happens, you'll receive a push notification saying "[Coach name] is calling" — tap it to join immediately, just like a phone call.

Optimizing call quality on mobile
A stable, high-quality video call depends on three things: your network, your device, and your environment. Here's how to maximize all three.
Network: Wi-Fi vs. mobile data
Most coaches recommend Wi-Fi for video calls because home broadband typically offers lower latency than mobile data. But crowded Wi-Fi networks (think a busy café or an apartment building with dozens of routers) can actually be worse than a solid 4G/5G signal. If your video is stuttering on Wi-Fi, toggle your phone to mobile data and test again — you may be surprised.
Coachful's Stream Video layer adapts dynamically to your available bandwidth (a feature called simulcast), so it will automatically reduce resolution rather than drop the call entirely. You can also manually lower the outgoing video quality: tap the ⋮ (More) menu during a call → Video Quality → choose 720p or 480p to ease the load on a weak connection.
Device: battery and background apps
Video encoding is CPU-intensive. If your phone is in Low Power Mode (iOS) or Battery Saver (Android), the processor throttles itself and you may see choppy video or audio glitches. Before an important session, plug in or disable power-saving mode.
Close background apps that use the camera or microphone — other video apps, voice recorders, or AR filters can conflict with Coachful's access to those hardware resources. A quick restart of the Coachful app before the session clears most conflicts.
Environment: lighting and acoustics
Face a window or a lamp — your coach will see you much more clearly with front-facing light than with a bright window behind you creating a silhouette effect. If you're in a noisy environment, Coachful's audio stack applies noise suppression by default, but a pair of earbuds with a built-in microphone will always outperform your phone's speaker.
Pro tip: Use earbuds or headphones for every coaching call. They eliminate echo, reduce background noise, and free up both hands — making it easier to take notes, do exercises, or reference your program tasks during the session.
Pro tips for a better mobile coaching experience
Lock your screen orientation before joining
Auto-rotation can be disorienting mid-call. Lock to portrait mode (or landscape if your coach prefers it for screen-sharing) before you tap Join. On iOS, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center and tap the rotation lock icon. On Android, pull down the notification shade and tap Auto-rotate to disable it.
Use Do Not Disturb during sessions
A phone call or SMS notification appearing over your coaching session is distracting for both you and your coach. Set your phone to Do Not Disturb (iOS) or Focus Mode (Android) for the duration of the call. Both platforms let you schedule this automatically around calendar events.
Check your program tasks before the call
Inside the Coachful app, tap Programs to review your current week's tasks and habit check-ins before your session. Walking in with completed tasks and clear progress notes makes the conversation with your coach far more productive — and you'll be surprised how much more you get out of a 45-minute call when you've spent three minutes preparing.
Instant calls from squad chat
If your coach runs a cohort squad or a community squad, they may start spontaneous group video calls directly from the squad chat. Watch for the call notification banner and join quickly — these are often informal, high-value group coaching moments that aren't recorded.
Troubleshooting common mobile video call problems
My camera shows a black screen
This almost always means another app has claimed the camera. Force-quit every other app on your phone, then re-join the call. If the problem persists, restart your device — this resets the camera hardware state. On iOS, also check that your camera isn't restricted under Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps.
My coach can't hear me
First, confirm the microphone icon in the call UI is not muted (a red slash means muted — tap it to unmute). Then verify microphone permission as described in the iOS or Android section above. If you're using Bluetooth earbuds, disconnect them and switch to the built-in microphone to rule out a Bluetooth audio routing issue — this is a surprisingly common culprit on both platforms.
The call keeps disconnecting
Frequent disconnects usually point to network instability. Run a speed test (fast.com works well) — you need at least 3 Mbps upload for a stable 720p call. If your speed is fine but you're still dropping, the issue may be packet loss rather than bandwidth; switching networks (Wi-Fi ↔ mobile data) is the fastest fix. Also ensure your phone isn't aggressively killing background apps: on Android, disable battery optimization for Coachful under Settings → Battery → App optimization.
I missed my session notification
Check that push notifications are enabled for Coachful in your phone's Settings. On iOS: Settings → Coachful → Notifications → Allow Notifications (toggle ON). On Android: Settings → Apps → Coachful → Notifications → All Coachful notifications ON. If notifications were off, you can also find your session in the Bookings tab and message your coach through the squad or 1:1 chat to reschedule.
The video call option isn't appearing in my Bookings
The Join Call button appears approximately 5 minutes before the scheduled start time. If you're early, the button will show as inactive — refresh the screen closer to the top of the hour. If the session start time has passed and the button still isn't there, contact your coach directly via chat; they may need to re-confirm the booking on their end.
I can't access the app on my phone's browser
Some corporate or parental-control Wi-Fi networks block WebRTC (the underlying video technology). If you're on a restricted network, switch to mobile data entirely. Alternatively, ask your IT administrator to whitelist *.coachful.co and *.stream-io-video.com.
