Connect Stripe to Coachful and start getting paid

If you're trying to accept payments from coaching clients, Stripe integration is the first thing you'll configure in Coachful. Without it, your offers, programs, and payment plans sit dormant — you can build everything, but clients can't check out. This guide walks you through connecting Stripe, understanding how Coachful uses Stripe Connect, and fixing the most common problems coaches run into.

TL;DR

  • Coachful uses Stripe Connect — your clients' payments go directly to your Stripe account, not through Coachful.
  • You need a Stripe account (free to create) before you can sell offers or enroll paying clients.
  • Connect under Settings → Billing → Connect Stripe in your coach dashboard.
  • Stripe must be in live mode for real payments; test mode only works for sandbox testing.
  • If connection fails, the most common culprits are incomplete Stripe onboarding or a mismatch between your Stripe account's country and Coachful's supported regions.

How Coachful's Stripe integration works

Coachful doesn't process your clients' money — Stripe does, on your behalf. Coachful uses Stripe Connect Express, which means each coach on the platform has their own connected Stripe account. When a client pays for a program, package, or one-time session, the funds land in your Stripe balance (minus Stripe's standard processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction for US cards). Coachful deducts its platform fee from that same transaction automatically — no manual reconciliation required.

This architecture matters for a few reasons. First, you own your revenue relationship — Coachful never holds your money. Second, you get the full power of the Stripe dashboard: payouts, dispute management, invoices, tax reporting, and more. Third, your clients see your business name on their card statements, not Coachful.

What you need before you connect

Before jumping into the integration, make sure you have the following:

  • A Stripe account. If you don't have one yet, create it at stripe.com. The account itself is free — Stripe only charges per transaction.
  • Completed Stripe onboarding. Stripe requires identity verification and a linked bank account before your account can accept live payments. If your Stripe account shows "Restricted" or "Pending", complete the onboarding flow in the Stripe dashboard first.
  • A Coachful account on the Growth or Scale plan. Stripe billing is available on all paid plans. If you're on a free trial, you can connect Stripe and test the checkout flow — you just won't be able to take live payments until you upgrade. Check the pricing page for what's included on each tier.
  • Admin or super_coach access to your Coachful workspace. Editors and standard members cannot connect payment methods.

Step-by-step: connecting your Stripe account

  1. Sign in to your Coachful dashboard at app.coachful.co/sign-in.
  2. Click your workspace name in the top-left corner, then go to Settings.
  3. Select the Billing tab from the left-hand settings navigation.
  4. Under the Payment Processor section, click Connect Stripe. You'll be redirected to Stripe's OAuth flow.
  5. Log in to your existing Stripe account, or create a new one if prompted.
  6. Review the permissions Coachful requests (ability to create charges, manage transfers, read account info), then click Authorize access to this account.
  7. Stripe redirects you back to Coachful. You should see a green "Connected" badge next to your Stripe account name.
  8. Toggle between Test mode and Live mode depending on whether you're testing or ready for real transactions. Live mode requires your Stripe account to be fully activated.

Once connected, every offer you create — one-time payments, recurring subscriptions, multi-tier memberships, payment plans, or coupons — will be processed through this Stripe account automatically.

Pro tip: Run a test purchase before launching your program publicly. Create a $1 offer in test mode, enroll yourself as a client, and confirm the checkout flow works end-to-end. Then switch to live mode and delete the test offer. This catches configuration issues before real clients hit your checkout page.

Setting up offers and payment types

With Stripe connected, you can configure pricing directly inside Coachful's offer builder. Navigate to Coach → Offers → New Offer and choose from the following billing structures:

  • One-time payment — A single charge at checkout. Ideal for standalone workshops or fixed-price programs.
  • Recurring subscription — Monthly or annual billing. Great for membership communities, ongoing accountability coaching, or retainer packages.
  • Payment plan — Split a larger total into installments (e.g., 3 payments of $333 for a $999 program). Coachful handles the installment schedule automatically via Stripe's subscription billing.
  • Multi-tier offers — Create different access levels (e.g., Basic, VIP) at different price points, all linked to the same program.
  • Coupons — Generate discount codes (percentage or fixed amount) under Coach → Offers → Coupons and apply them to any offer at checkout.

All of these billing types are powered by the same Stripe connection — no additional setup per product type is needed.

Coaches using Coachful often find that offering a payment plan option increases program enrollment by reducing upfront price resistance — without any extra administrative work, since Stripe handles the recurring charges automatically.

Managing payouts and Stripe settings

Coachful doesn't control your payout schedule — that's managed entirely inside Stripe. By default, Stripe pays out on a standard schedule (daily rolling basis in most countries, with a 2-day delay for new accounts). To change your payout frequency or update your bank account details, log in directly to your Stripe dashboard and navigate to Balances → Manage payouts.

You can also handle the following Stripe-side tasks directly in your Stripe dashboard:

  • Issuing full or partial refunds on specific charges.
  • Responding to chargebacks and disputes.
  • Downloading financial reports for tax purposes.
  • Setting up Stripe Tax for automatic sales tax / VAT collection (recommended if you sell internationally).

In Coachful, you can view a summary of recent transactions under Settings → Billing → Transaction History, but for full financial reporting, always use the Stripe dashboard as your source of truth.

Disconnecting or switching Stripe accounts

If you need to switch to a different Stripe account — for example, if you're rebranding your business under a new legal entity — go to Settings → Billing and click Disconnect Stripe. This does not cancel any active subscriptions your clients have; those will continue to bill against the original Stripe account until they naturally expire or are cancelled. After disconnecting, you can immediately connect a new Stripe account following the same steps above.

Active subscriptions tied to the old account will need to be migrated manually. Export your subscriber list from the old Stripe account and ask affected clients to re-enroll under your new offer. Coachful's support team can assist with bulk migrations — reach out via the in-app chat.

Troubleshooting common Stripe integration issues

1. "Connect Stripe" button is grayed out or missing

This usually means your Coachful account doesn't have the right role. Only users with admin or super_coach permissions can connect payment processors. Ask your workspace owner to either grant you admin access or connect Stripe themselves. It can also appear if your workspace is on a plan that doesn't include billing features — check under Settings → Plan.

2. Stripe redirects back to Coachful with an error

The most common cause is an incomplete Stripe onboarding. Log in to your Stripe account and look for any banners or alerts asking you to verify your identity, add a bank account, or confirm your business details. Stripe blocks Connect authorization until those steps are complete. Once your Stripe account shows "Active" status, retry the connection from Coachful.

3. Payments succeed but money isn't showing in my Stripe balance

There are two typical reasons. First, new Stripe accounts often have a 7-day payout hold on the first few transactions while Stripe verifies your business. This is normal and lifts automatically. Second, if your Stripe account is in restricted mode due to a compliance review, payouts are paused until you respond to Stripe's information request. Check your Stripe dashboard for any open action items under Settings → Account details.

4. Client sees "Payment failed" at checkout even with a valid card

This is almost always a Stripe-side decline — not a Coachful bug. Common reasons include: the card's issuer blocked an online transaction, the billing address didn't match, or the card has a spending limit. Ask your client to try a different card or contact their bank. For test mode, remember that only specific Stripe test card numbers will succeed — a real card number used in test mode will always fail.

5. Coupons aren't being applied at checkout

Verify that the coupon is active and hasn't exceeded its redemption limit. Go to Coach → Offers → Coupons, find the code, and check the expiry date and maximum redemptions. Also confirm the coupon is assigned to the specific offer the client is purchasing — coupons scoped to one offer won't apply at checkout for a different offer.

6. Stripe is connected but subscriptions aren't renewing

Check whether your Stripe account has received any email notices about payment method updates or failed renewal attempts. Stripe will retry failed subscription charges up to 4 times over a configurable window (set under your Stripe billing settings). If all retries fail, Stripe marks the subscription as "past due" or "unpaid" and Coachful will revoke the client's access automatically. You can re-activate access once the client updates their payment method and settles the outstanding balance.

Pro tips for Stripe + Coachful power users

A few practices that save time and prevent headaches:

  • Use Stripe's test mode during program builds. Before going live with a new program, switch to test mode in Settings → Billing, run a checkout, confirm the squad auto-creates and program access is granted, then switch back to live. This validates your full funnel without charging anyone real money.
  • Set up Stripe Customer Portal. In your Stripe dashboard, enable the Customer Portal so clients can self-serve billing updates (cancel, update card, download invoices) without emailing you. This alone saves coaches several hours of admin per month.
  • Add Stripe Tax early. If you're selling to clients in multiple countries, configure Stripe Tax before you get your first international sale. Retrofitting tax collection is painful — set it up proactively in the Stripe dashboard under Tax → Settings.
Best practice: Keep your Stripe account's business name and support email up to date. These appear on your clients' card statements and receipts. A recognizable business name dramatically reduces "I don't recognize this charge" disputes — which are costly even if you win them.

Frequently asked questions

Does Coachful take a percentage of my Stripe payments?
Yes, Coachful deducts a small platform fee from each transaction processed through your connected Stripe account. The fee amount depends on your plan tier (Growth or Scale). Stripe also charges its standard processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. You never receive a separate invoice from Coachful for these fees — they're deducted automatically at the point of sale.
Can I use Stripe in test mode on Coachful?
Yes. In your Coachful dashboard under Settings → Billing, you can toggle between live mode and test mode. In test mode, use Stripe's official test card numbers to simulate purchases without charging anyone real money. Switching back to live mode is required before accepting real client payments.
What happens to my clients' active subscriptions if I disconnect Stripe?
Disconnecting Stripe from Coachful does not automatically cancel your clients' active subscriptions — those continue to bill through the original Stripe account until they expire or are cancelled manually. You will need to reconnect a Stripe account (or the same one) to manage future enrollments and new payments.
Can I offer payment plans or installments through Coachful?
Yes. Coachful's offer builder supports payment plans that split a total program price into recurring installments (e.g., 3 monthly payments). Stripe handles the automatic charge schedule, and Coachful manages access control — clients retain program access as long as their installments are current.
Why is my Stripe account showing as 'Restricted' after connecting?
A 'Restricted' status means Stripe needs additional information to verify your identity or business. Log in to your Stripe dashboard and complete any outstanding verification steps. Until your account is fully activated, you can use test mode in Coachful but cannot process real payments.
Do my clients need a Stripe account to pay me?
No. Clients pay through Coachful's hosted checkout page using any major credit or debit card. Stripe processes the payment in the background — clients never interact with Stripe directly and don't need a Stripe account.
Can I use multiple Stripe accounts for different programs or brands?
Coachful currently supports one connected Stripe account per workspace. If you operate multiple coaching brands, each brand would need its own separate Coachful workspace with its own Stripe connection. You can switch Stripe accounts by disconnecting the current one and connecting a new one under Settings → Billing.
