You're mid-session, a client just messaged you, and you're fumbling through a browser tab to respond. There's a faster way. Coachful runs as a Progressive Web App (PWA) — meaning you can install it directly on your phone or desktop and get a near-native app experience without touching the App Store or Google Play. No downloads, no updates to manage, no storage bloat.

This guide walks you through installing the Coachful PWA on every major device and browser, explains what you unlock when you do, and covers the most common hiccups coaches and clients run into.

What Is a Progressive Web App — and Why Does It Matter?

A Progressive Web App is a website that behaves like a native app. It lives on your home screen, launches full-screen (no browser chrome), loads fast thanks to service-worker caching, and can receive push notifications. For coaches running their business on the go, that difference is huge.

Coachful's PWA is available at app.coachful.co (or your custom subdomain, e.g., yourname.coachful.co). When you install it, your device saves a shortcut that opens Coachful in a standalone window — no address bar, no browser tabs competing for your attention — exactly like the native iOS and Android shell apps Coachful ships via Capacitor.

PWA vs. the Native App Shell

Coachful also offers a native mobile shell (downloadable from the App Store and Google Play) built with Capacitor. The PWA and the native shell share the same codebase and features. The main difference is installation method. The PWA installs in seconds from your browser; the native shell goes through the standard app store flow. For most users, the PWA is the faster path to getting started — especially on desktop, where there is no native app.

What You Get With the Coachful PWA

  • Home-screen icon — One tap to open Coachful, just like any other app.
  • Full-screen experience — No browser navigation bar eating into your screen space.
  • Push notifications — Get alerted for new messages, session reminders, and program updates (permission required).
  • Offline resilience — Previously loaded content stays accessible even if your connection drops temporarily.
  • Faster load times — Service workers cache the app shell so it launches instantly.
  • Access to all features — Programs, squads, bookings, Stream Chat, video calls, billing — everything available on desktop works in the PWA.
Pro tip: Coaches who install the PWA on both their phone and laptop report spending less time context-switching. One workspace, everywhere. Start a free Coachful trial and install the PWA on all your devices in under two minutes.

Installing the Coachful PWA on iPhone (Safari)

Apple only allows PWA installation through Safari. If you're using Chrome or Firefox on iOS, switch to Safari first — the "Add to Home Screen" option won't appear in other browsers on iOS.

  1. Open Safari and navigate to app.coachful.co (or your coach's custom subdomain if you're a client).
  2. Sign in to your Coachful account if prompted.
  3. Tap the Share button — the box with an arrow pointing up — at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Scroll down the share sheet and tap Add to Home Screen.
  5. Edit the name if you like (e.g., "Coachful" or your coach's brand name), then tap Add in the top-right corner.
  6. Find the Coachful icon on your home screen and tap it to launch.

The app opens full-screen on every subsequent launch. You'll be prompted to allow push notifications the first time — tap Allow to make sure you never miss a client message or session reminder.

Troubleshooting iOS Installation

If you don't see "Add to Home Screen" in the share sheet, scroll further down — it can be hidden below the fold. If it's still missing, confirm you're using Safari and not an in-app browser (e.g., opening a link from inside Instagram or Gmail will use an embedded browser that doesn't support PWA installation).

Installing the Coachful PWA on Android (Chrome)

Android with Chrome gives you the smoothest PWA experience. Chrome often surfaces an automatic install banner at the bottom of the screen when it detects a PWA-ready site.

  1. Open Chrome and go to app.coachful.co.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. If an "Add Coachful to Home screen" banner appears at the bottom of the screen, tap it and confirm. You're done.
  4. If the banner didn't appear, tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner of Chrome.
  5. Tap Add to Home screen (some versions of Chrome show "Install app" instead).
  6. Confirm by tapping Add or Install.
  7. The Coachful icon appears on your home screen. Tap it to launch in standalone mode.

On Android, the PWA also integrates with the system's app drawer, so it shows up alongside your other installed apps. You can long-press the icon to get quick actions just like a native app.

Using Other Android Browsers

Samsung Internet, Edge, and Firefox for Android also support PWA installation, though the exact menu path varies. In Samsung Internet, tap the menu icon and look for "Add page to" → "Home screen". In Microsoft Edge, tap the three-dot menu → "Add to phone" → "Add". The experience is identical once installed.

Installing the Coachful PWA on Desktop (Chrome, Edge, or Brave)

Desktop PWA installation turns Coachful into a proper window on your Mac or PC — with its own entry in your taskbar or dock, separate from your browser. This is especially useful for coaches who live in their Coachful dashboard all day.

  1. Open Chrome, Edge, or Brave and go to app.coachful.co.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Look for the install icon in the browser's address bar — it looks like a monitor with a download arrow (Chrome) or a "+" icon (Edge). Click it.
  4. A dialog box will appear asking "Install Coachful?". Click Install.
  5. Coachful opens immediately in its own standalone window. A shortcut is added to your desktop and/or taskbar automatically.

If you don't see the install icon, try the manual path: in Chrome, click the three-dot menu → Save and shareInstall page as app. In Edge, click the three-dot menu → AppsInstall this site as an app.

macOS Safari

Safari on macOS Sonoma (14+) supports PWA installation. Click File in the menu bar → Add to Dock. Coachful will appear in your Dock and launch as a standalone app window. On earlier macOS versions, Safari doesn't support PWA installation — use Chrome or Edge instead.

Already a Coachful user? Sign in to your workspace and install the PWA right now — it takes less than 60 seconds and you'll have instant access to your programs, client chats, and upcoming sessions.

Enabling Push Notifications After Installation

Push notifications are one of the biggest reasons to install the PWA instead of relying on a bookmarked browser tab. On first launch after installation, your device will ask whether to allow notifications from Coachful. Tap or click Allow.

If you accidentally blocked notifications, here's how to re-enable them:

  • iOS: Go to Settings → Notifications → Coachful and toggle on "Allow Notifications".
  • Android: Long-press the Coachful icon → App infoNotifications → enable all.
  • Chrome (desktop): Click the lock icon in the address bar when Coachful is open → Site settings → set Notifications to "Allow".

Coachful sends notifications for new chat messages (via Stream), session reminders, new client enrollments, and program activity. You can fine-tune which notifications you receive inside Settings → Notifications in your Coachful dashboard.

Pro Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Coachful PWA

Use Your Custom Subdomain, Not the Generic URL

If you're a coach with a custom subdomain (e.g., yourname.coachful.co), install that URL as the PWA — not the generic app.coachful.co. Your clients should do the same. This ensures the branding is consistent and that everyone lands in the right workspace automatically on every launch.

Share a Direct Install Link With Clients

Clients often don't know the PWA exists. Add a short note to your onboarding sequence — you can automate this inside a Coachful Program using a Day 1 task — that says: "Tap the link below and follow the 'Add to Home Screen' instructions to get the app." It eliminates the friction of the App Store and improves your client engagement rates.

Stay Signed In

The PWA maintains your session across launches, so you won't be asked to log in every time. If you find yourself being signed out frequently, make sure your device's browser storage or site data settings aren't set to clear on exit.

Insight from our coaching community: Coaches who make the PWA part of their onboarding checklist see meaningfully higher client app engagement in the first 30 days. A one-time, two-minute install beats the friction of clients hunting for notifications in a browser bookmark every time.

Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

"Add to Home Screen" is missing on iOS

This almost always means you're not using Safari. iOS enforces that PWA installs happen exclusively through Safari. Close the in-app browser or Chrome, open Safari, and navigate to app.coachful.co fresh.

The app still shows the browser address bar after installation

Make sure you're opening Coachful from the home-screen icon, not from a browser tab. If you open a link from email or another app, it may open in an in-app browser rather than the installed PWA. On Android, you can set Coachful as the default handler by going to App info → Open by default → Add links.

Notifications aren't arriving

Check that notifications are enabled at both the OS level (device Settings → Notifications) and within Coachful's own notification settings. On iOS, also verify that Focus/Do Not Disturb modes aren't silencing Coachful alerts.

The PWA isn't updating to the latest version

PWAs update automatically in the background. If you suspect you're running an old version, close the app completely, reopen it, and pull down to refresh. On desktop, pressing Ctrl+Shift+R (or Cmd+Shift+R on Mac) inside the PWA window forces a hard reload.

I installed the PWA but I can't find it

On iOS, swipe through all your home-screen pages — the icon is added to the next available spot. On Android, check your app drawer. On desktop, search your applications for "Coachful" or check your desktop for the shortcut.

The icon looks like a generic browser icon

This occasionally happens on older Android versions when Chrome places the shortcut before the site's PWA manifest fully loads. Delete the shortcut and reinstall — navigate to app.coachful.co, wait for the page to fully load, then use the install prompt again. The branded Coachful icon should appear correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Coachful PWA different from the native iOS and Android app?
The Coachful PWA and the native app shell share the same features and codebase. The main difference is how you install them — the PWA installs directly from your browser in seconds, while the native app goes through the App Store or Google Play. Both offer a full-screen experience, push notifications, and access to all Coachful features.
Why can't I see 'Add to Home Screen' on my iPhone?
Apple only allows PWA installation through Safari on iOS. If you're using Chrome, Firefox, or an in-app browser, you won't see the option. Open Safari, navigate to app.coachful.co, tap the Share button, and scroll down to find 'Add to Home Screen'.
Do I need to update the Coachful PWA manually?
No. The PWA updates automatically in the background whenever Coachful releases a new version. If you want to force an immediate update, close and reopen the app, then pull down to refresh. On desktop, pressing Ctrl+Shift+R (or Cmd+Shift+R on Mac) forces a hard reload.
Can my coaching clients also install the PWA?
Yes — clients install the PWA the same way coaches do, using your custom subdomain (e.g., yourname.coachful.co). We recommend adding PWA installation instructions as a Day 1 task inside your onboarding program to maximize client engagement from the start.
Does the Coachful PWA work offline?
The PWA uses service-worker caching so previously loaded content — such as program tasks and recent messages — remains accessible if your connection drops temporarily. Real-time features like live chat and video calls require an active internet connection.
Will I receive push notifications through the PWA?
Yes. After installation you'll be prompted to allow notifications. Coachful sends alerts for new chat messages, session reminders, client enrollments, and program activity. You can customize which notifications you receive inside Settings → Notifications in your dashboard.
Can I install the Coachful PWA on a desktop computer?
Yes. Chrome, Edge, and Brave on Windows and macOS all support PWA installation. Look for the install icon in the browser's address bar after visiting app.coachful.co, or use the browser menu. macOS Safari supports PWA installation on Sonoma (macOS 14) and later via File → Add to Dock.
