Getting paid as a coach should be the easiest part of your business — but the first time you hit the Stripe connection screen in Coachful, a simple question can slow you down: should you connect your existing Stripe account or create a brand-new one? The answer depends on how you already use Stripe, your tax situation, and how you want to separate your coaching revenue from other income streams. This guide walks through both paths in detail so you can make the right call in under five minutes.

TL;DR: Existing vs. New Stripe Account

  • Connect existing if you already accept payments via Stripe and want one consolidated payout history, the same bank account, and no new KYC verification.
  • Create new if you want clean separation between coaching revenue and other businesses, need a fresh legal entity, or are setting up Coachful for the first time and have never used Stripe before.
  • Either way, Coachful uses Stripe Connect — you always own your Stripe account and receive payouts directly. Coachful never holds your funds.
  • You can swap or disconnect your Stripe account later, but doing so mid-cycle can interrupt active subscriptions.

How Coachful's Stripe Integration Works

Coachful is built on Stripe Connect, a model where each coach operates their own independent Stripe account that is linked — not merged — into the Coachful platform. When a client purchases one of your offers (a one-time program, a recurring subscription, a payment plan, or a coupon-discounted package), Stripe processes the charge directly on your connected account. Payouts flow straight to the bank account you have on file with Stripe, on Stripe's standard payout schedule.

This architecture means Coachful has no access to your funds and never acts as a payment intermediary. It also means everything you already know about your Stripe dashboard — disputes, refunds, tax reporting, payouts — continues to work exactly the same way inside Coachful. The platform simply uses the Stripe API to create products, prices, subscriptions, and payment intents on your behalf.

You can read more about how Stripe Connect works for platforms on the official Stripe Connect documentation.

Option A: Connecting an Existing Stripe Account

If you already have a Stripe account — whether you use it for a different website, a physical product business, or freelance invoices — you can connect that same account to Coachful in seconds. No new verification, no re-entering bank details.

When to choose this option

  • You want a single Stripe dashboard showing all your revenue in one place.
  • Your existing Stripe account is already fully verified (identity + bank account) and you'd rather not repeat that process.
  • Your coaching business operates under the same legal entity as your other Stripe activity (same sole proprietorship, LLC, etc.).
  • You have existing Stripe customers whose cards you want to keep on file for future coaching subscriptions.

Step-by-step: Connect your existing Stripe account

  1. In your Coachful dashboard, go to Settings → Billing → Payment Processor.
  2. Click Connect with Stripe. You'll be redirected to a Stripe OAuth screen.
  3. On the Stripe page, choose Sign in to your existing Stripe account (do not click "Create account").
  4. Enter your Stripe login credentials and complete any two-factor authentication Stripe requires.
  5. Review the permissions Coachful is requesting — these cover creating charges, managing subscriptions, and reading payout data — then click Connect my Stripe account.
  6. Stripe redirects you back to Coachful. You'll see a green "Connected" badge and the last four digits of your Stripe account ID.
  7. Run a test by creating a $0 or $1 test offer in Coach → Offers → Create new to confirm the connection is live.

Things to watch out for

If your existing Stripe account has multiple businesses under one login (Stripe allows this), double-check which account you're connecting on the OAuth screen — there's a dropdown to switch between them. Connect the one whose bank account and legal name should appear on client receipts for your coaching business.

Also note that Stripe's product catalog on your existing account will remain separate. Coachful creates its own products and prices programmatically; it won't import or overwrite anything already in your Stripe dashboard.

Option B: Creating a New Stripe Account

Creating a fresh Stripe account takes roughly 10–15 minutes and gives your coaching business a completely clean financial identity. This is often the better choice for coaches who are serious about keeping their books tidy from day one.

When to choose this option

  • You've never used Stripe before — this will be your first account.
  • Your coaching business is a separate legal entity (a different LLC, Ltd, or sole trader registration) from any other Stripe activity.
  • You want a dedicated bank account for coaching revenue and clean annual tax reports with no mixing of income streams.
  • You're onboarding a coaching practice on behalf of someone else (e.g., as an admin or virtual assistant) and need a net-new account under the coach's identity.

Step-by-step: Create a new Stripe account during Coachful setup

  1. In your Coachful dashboard, go to Settings → Billing → Payment Processor.
  2. Click Connect with Stripe.
  3. On the Stripe OAuth screen, click Create a new Stripe account (usually a small link below the login form).
  4. Enter the email address you want associated with this Stripe account. Use a business email if possible.
  5. Complete Stripe's identity verification: legal name, date of birth, home address, and last four digits of your SSN (US) or equivalent national ID for other countries. This is required by banking regulations, not by Coachful.
  6. Add your business details: business type (individual, LLC, etc.), website (your Coachful subdomain works perfectly here, e.g., yourname.coachful.co), and a short description of what you do.
  7. Add a bank account for payouts — routing and account number (US) or IBAN (EU/UK).
  8. Submit the form. Stripe will review your information, usually instantly. Once approved, you'll be automatically redirected back to Coachful with your new account connected.
Pro tip: Use your Coachful subdomain (yourname.coachful.co) or your custom domain as the "business website" in Stripe's onboarding form. This satisfies Stripe's website requirement and keeps your branding consistent across platforms. You can set up your custom domain under Settings → Domains in Coachful.

Stripe Verification: What to Expect

Whether you're connecting an existing account or creating a new one, Stripe may occasionally request additional verification documents — especially for higher-volume accounts or if your information doesn't auto-verify. This is Stripe's standard KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance process and has nothing to do with Coachful.

Common verification requests include:

  • A government-issued photo ID (passport, driver's license).
  • Proof of business registration (for LLCs or corporations).
  • A bank statement to confirm your payout account details.

These requests appear as banners directly inside your Stripe dashboard. Coachful will show a warning in Settings → Billing if your Stripe account has any outstanding requirements that could block payouts. Address them in Stripe first, then return to Coachful — no reconnection needed.

Managing Multiple Coaches and Stripe Accounts

If you run a coaching organization — for example, you have staff coaches under your brand — each coach role in Coachful can have their own Stripe account connected, or you can funnel all revenue through a single Stripe account owned by the organization. The right setup depends on your business model:

  • Centralized billing: The super_coach (owner) connects one Stripe account, and all offers across the org use that account. Revenue is pooled, and you handle coach payouts manually or via Stripe's internal tools.
  • Per-coach billing: Each coach connects their own Stripe account. Clients pay the individual coach directly. This works well for loosely affiliated coaching networks where each coach is their own business.

You can review and manage connected Stripe accounts under Settings → Organization → Team Members. Virtual assistants and editors do not have Stripe access — only users with the coach role or above can connect a payment processor.

Switching or Disconnecting Your Stripe Account

You can disconnect your current Stripe account and connect a different one at any time from Settings → Billing → Payment Processor → Disconnect. However, there are important caveats:

  • Active subscriptions: Recurring subscriptions are tied to the original Stripe account. If you disconnect, those subscriptions will not automatically migrate. Clients may need to re-enter payment details.
  • Pending payouts: Disconnect only after all pending payouts on the old account have cleared to your bank.
  • Stripe products: Offers and price objects created by Coachful live inside the original Stripe account. They won't transfer to a new account automatically.

If you need to switch accounts mid-business, the safest approach is to keep the old account connected until all active subscriptions have lapsed or been manually cancelled, then connect the new account for all future sales.

Troubleshooting Common Stripe Connection Issues

The OAuth screen shows "This account is already connected"

This usually means your Stripe account is connected to another Coachful workspace (perhaps a test workspace or an old account). Log into your Stripe Connect settings and revoke the existing Coachful authorization, then try reconnecting from Coachful.

Coachful shows "Stripe not connected" even after I completed the flow

This can happen if the OAuth redirect was interrupted — a browser extension blocked the redirect, or you closed the tab too early. Clear your browser cache, go back to Settings → Billing, and repeat the connection flow. If the issue persists, try an incognito window.

My Stripe account is connected but payouts aren't reaching my bank

Check your Stripe dashboard for any outstanding verification requirements (the red banner at the top of the Stripe home screen). Stripe holds payouts when KYC is incomplete. Coachful cannot release funds — only Stripe can once your account is verified.

I created the wrong type of Stripe account (individual vs. business)

You can update your Stripe account type directly in the Stripe dashboard under Settings → Account details → Business type without disconnecting from Coachful. Changes apply immediately and don't affect existing subscriptions.

The "Connect with Stripe" button is greyed out

Only users with the coach, admin, or super_admin role can connect a payment processor. If you're logged in as an editor, member, or virtual assistant, you won't see the option. Ask your workspace owner to adjust your role under Settings → Organization → Team Members.

I want to use Stripe in a country not listed in Coachful's onboarding

Coachful supports any country that Stripe Connect supports — which currently covers 46+ countries. If your country isn't auto-populated in the Stripe onboarding form, select it manually from the country dropdown. Currency and payout settings will adjust automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my existing Stripe account with Coachful?
Yes. During Coachful's Stripe connection flow, choose 'Sign in to your existing Stripe account' on the OAuth screen and authenticate with your Stripe credentials. Your bank account, verification status, and payout history all carry over. No re-verification is needed unless Stripe flags a new compliance requirement.
Does Coachful take a percentage of my coaching revenue?
No. Coachful uses Stripe Connect, which means payments go directly to your Stripe account. Coachful charges a platform subscription fee (on the growth or scale plan) but does not take a cut of your coaching revenue. You pay only Stripe's standard processing fees (typically 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction for US cards).
What happens to my active client subscriptions if I switch Stripe accounts?
Active subscriptions are tied to the Stripe account they were created on. Switching accounts does not automatically migrate subscriptions — clients on recurring plans may need to re-enter their payment details after you connect a new Stripe account. It's best to switch only when no active subscriptions are running, or wait for existing ones to lapse before migrating.
Can multiple coaches in the same Coachful organization each have their own Stripe account?
Yes. Each coach-role user in a Coachful organization can connect their own individual Stripe account, so clients pay each coach directly. Alternatively, the organization owner (super_coach) can connect a single centralized Stripe account for all revenue. The right setup depends on your business structure and how you handle coach payouts.
How long does Stripe verification take when creating a new account?
For most individuals and sole traders, Stripe's identity verification is instant when the information you provide matches banking records. In some cases — especially for business entities like LLCs — Stripe may request additional documents, which can take 1–3 business days to review. You can still create offers and test payments while verification is pending, but payouts will be held until the account is fully verified.
What role do I need in Coachful to connect a Stripe account?
You need the coach, admin, or super_admin role to access the Stripe connection settings in Coachful. Editors, members, and virtual assistants do not have billing permissions. If the 'Connect with Stripe' button is greyed out, ask your workspace owner to update your role under Settings → Organization → Team Members.
Can I connect Stripe if my country isn't in the US?
Yes. Coachful supports Stripe Connect in all 46+ countries where Stripe operates, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and most of the EU. During the Stripe onboarding flow, select your country from the dropdown and Stripe will adjust the required identity documents, currency, and payout schedule accordingly.
